Calipers

Calipers are tools used to measure distances.  Specifically they are precision measuring instruments to measure lengths, diameters, depths, and steps.  There are several types of calipers.

Vernier Caliper
The vernier caliper is caliper with two measuring scales.  On the body of the tool is a standard inch or metric ruler.  The sliding jaw of the caliper has a vernier scale.  The vernier scale allows you to take measurements with fine precision up to a hundredth of an inch or millimeter.

Dial Caliper
The vernier caliper was improved upon by people needing a way to read measurements faster.  The vernier scale was replaced by a dial.  The dial will have fractions of an inch or millimeter marks to the hundredth place.

Digital Caliper
The digital caliper made the caliper an electronic tool.  Measuring objects became super simple with the digital caliper since the measurements is displayed instantly.  With a push of a button the measurements can be converted between inches and millimeters on the screen.  Some digital calipers will also have an output port to send the digital readouts to a computer program.
