A micrometer tool is similar to a caliper, but used when more precision measurements are required. The tool looks like a C-clamp and can give you resolutions up to a thousandth of an inch. When industry requires fast and super precise measurements, the use of a laser micrometer is needed. Laser micrometers are often used in production lines to maintain quality control as they have very high sampling rates and can report the measurements to a computer. For example, a pipe could be moving though an production line while the laser micrometer measures the diameter of the pipe along the entire length.
